Riba is sood in Urdu and byaj in Hindi: the fixed, pre-agreed excess that a bank or lender pays or charges for the use of money over time, whatever name the product gives it. In Indian banking that covers savings account interest, fixed and recurring deposit interest, the interest component of every EMI, credit card finance charges and late payment interest. It does not cover rent, trade profit or the markup on a genuine sale. This page defines the term, separates its two classical forms, and maps the products an Indian household actually holds to riba or not, using the Reserve Bank of India's own product definitions. If you want the practical playbook first, start with the halal banking guide.

What riba means in Hindi and Urdu
Riba comes from an Arabic root meaning increase or growth. In Urdu the everyday word is sood (also written sud), which is the term used in the fatwa literature of Deoband, Bareilly and Nadwa alike. In Hindi the word is byaj (also vyaj), the word printed on a Hindi passbook and in Hindi versions of bank deposit rules. Both translate the English word interest. Byaj is also the word a village moneylender's borrower uses, so the Hindi term already carries the sense of a charge for time on money.
The Quran separates trade from riba in the closing passage of Surah al-Baqarah, permitting the first and forbidding the second, and the jurists built a working definition from that contrast. Riba is any excess over the principal in a loan or a debt that is stipulated in advance, or expected by custom, without a countervalue other than time. Three features have to be present at once: there is a loan or a debt of money or of a fungible commodity; the lender receives more than was lent; and the extra was agreed or expected from the start. If those three are present the ruling does not change because the paperwork calls it interest, finance charge, yield, return or reward.
Many Indian Muslims treat bank byaj as a different thing from the sood a sahukar charges. In fiqh there is no such distinction: the size of the rate, the identity of the lender and the purpose of the money do not alter the category, and the prohibition is addressed to the one who pays as well as the one who receives.
Riba al-nasi'ah and riba al-fadl, with one Indian example each
Riba al-nasi'ah is the riba of delay: the excess charged for time on a loan or a deferred debt. It is the form the Quran addresses directly and the form almost every Indian financial product contains. A home loan repaid in EMIs, where every instalment carries a stated interest component, is riba al-nasi'ah from the borrower's side. A fixed deposit, where the bank promises a stated rate for a stated tenor on a stated sum, is riba al-nasi'ah from the depositor's side. Money went out, more money came back, and the difference was for time alone.
Riba al-fadl is the riba of excess: an unequal spot exchange of the same ribawi commodity, the six named in the hadith being gold, silver, wheat, barley, dates and salt, with currency added by analogy in modern fiqh. The Indian example every household knows is the jeweller's exchange counter. Handing over old gold jewellery and taking new jewellery of lower weight, with the difference treated as making charges, is gold for gold in unequal amounts. The halal route is two separate contracts: sell the old gold for rupees, then buy the new piece for rupees, each settled on the spot. The same logic forbids paying extra rupees to get rupee change, and requires any exchange of one currency for another to be settled hand to hand.
What the RBI's own definitions say about your bank accounts
The Reserve Bank of India (Interest Rate on Deposits) Directions, 2016, the master direction that binds every scheduled commercial bank, small finance bank, payments bank and local area bank, defines the three deposit types an Indian holds. A current account is 'a form of non-interest bearing demand deposit' from which withdrawals are allowed any number of times. A savings deposit is 'a form of interest bearing demand deposit', whatever the account is called, including Basic Savings Bank Deposit Accounts. A term deposit is 'a interest bearing deposit received by the bank for a fixed period', and the definition expressly includes recurring, cumulative, annuity and reinvestment deposits and cash certificates.
Section 5 of the same Directions states that no interest shall be paid on deposits held in current accounts, with a narrow exception for balances of a deceased depositor, which earn the savings rate until paid to the claimant. Section 6 requires savings interest to be calculated on a daily product basis, with a uniform rate on balances up to ₹1 lakh and permitted differential rates on end-of-day balances above that. Section 7 provides that a term deposit withdrawn early earns the rate applicable to the period it actually stayed, not the contracted rate, and that nothing is paid if it is broken before the minimum tenor of seven days.
Read through the fiqh lens, the regulator has done the classification for you. The current account is the only deposit the RBI itself defines as non-interest-bearing, which is why it is the one bank balance an Indian Muslim can hold without a purification problem; the detail is in the current account guide. Savings and term deposits are interest contracts by regulatory definition. There is no room to read an FD as a profit share: it is a fixed return on a fixed sum for a fixed period, the textbook riba al-nasi'ah. The bank accounts hub sets out how to run a household on current accounts and what to do with legacy savings balances.
Indian products mapped to riba or not
| Product | Riba or not | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Savings account interest | Riba (nasi'ah) | RBI defines a savings deposit as interest bearing; excess on money for time |
| Fixed, recurring or cumulative deposit | Riba | RBI term deposit definition; fixed return on a fixed sum for a fixed tenor |
| Home loan or car loan EMI | Interest portion is riba | Stated interest on a money debt; the principal repayment itself is not |
| Credit card revolving balance | Riba | Finance charge on an unpaid money debt after the due date |
| Late fee on an EMI or card | Riba | Stipulated excess for delay on a debt, even if a flat amount |
| EPF interest | Contested | Compulsory contribution; many scholars require purification, some permit |
| PPF or post office scheme interest | Riba for most scholars | Voluntary deposit with a declared rate for time |
| Trade markup, shop credit, murabaha | Not riba | Price of goods in a sale, even when the price is deferred |
| Rent on a flat or a car | Not riba | Payment for use of an asset the owner keeps and bears risk for |
| Dividend on shares | Not riba | Share of business profit; purify any interest income inside it |
| Cooperative society service charge | Debated | Fixed fee on a qard hasan loan; ujrah to some scholars, riba to others |
EPF is marked contested because the contribution is compulsory for most salaried employees, and the fatwa literature splits on whether a return received without choice carries the same ruling as one sought voluntarily; the EPF interest article lays out both positions. The service charge row is explained further down.
Loans and EMIs: why the label does not change the ruling
Indian lenders use many words for the same thing: home loan interest, two-wheeler finance charge, consumer durable processing fee plus interest, gold loan interest, a no-cost EMI subsidised by the retailer. The test is always the contract. If a bank or NBFC advances money and receives more money back for the passage of time, the excess is riba al-nasi'ah whatever the repayment schedule calls it. Every amortisation schedule splits an EMI into a principal component and an interest component. The principal is repayment of the loan and carries no sin; the interest component is the riba.
Processing fees sit on a line. A one-off fee that reflects actual administrative cost is treated by many scholars as a permissible wage for work; a fee calculated as a percentage of the loan amount, rising with the sum borrowed rather than the work done, is interest under another name on the stricter view. The no-cost EMI is a different trick: the retailer discounts the price by the interest the bank will charge, so the buyer pays the sticker price in instalments while the bank still books interest on a loan to the buyer, which is why the credit card and no-cost EMI article treats it as riba.
The prohibition runs both ways. The hadith reported by Jabir curses the one who consumes riba, the one who pays it, the one who writes it down and the two who witness it, and says they are all alike. Paying interest on a loan is therefore not a neutral act that only harms the bank. Where a scholar permits an interest-bearing loan for a Muslim in India, as some do for a first home, it is a necessity ruling with conditions, not a reclassification of the interest as something else.
Credit cards and late fees: what the RBI's card rules define
The RBI's Master Direction on Credit Card and Debit Card Issuance and Conduct defines the Interest-Free Credit Period as 'the time period from the date of transaction to the due date of payment, wherein interest free payment can be made, subject to the payment of entire outstanding on or before the payment due date by the cardholder'. It defines the Minimum Amount Due as the minimum part of the bill a cardholder must pay to avoid being treated as overdue. It requires card issuers to quote Annualised Percentage Rates separately for retail purchases, balance transfers, cash advances, non-payment of the minimum amount due and late payment, to show the method of calculating late payment charges prominently, and it prohibits capitalising unpaid charges for compounding of interest.
The fiqh reading follows the regulator's own structure. A card settled in full within the interest-free period involves no riba actually paid, which is why many contemporary scholars permit holding one on condition of full payment every month. The contract still contains a riba clause, the APR that applies the moment a balance revolves, and the stricter view holds that signing a contract containing riba is itself impermissible except for need. Paying only the minimum amount due triggers the finance charge, which is riba without dispute. The late payment charge is an excess for delay on a debt and is riba in the view of most scholars even when it is a flat fee rather than a percentage; Islamic banks abroad route such charges to charity precisely because they cannot keep them.
What is not riba: profit, rent, markup, and the service charge question
Trade profit is not riba. Buying goods and selling them for more is the activity the Quran contrasts with riba, and the majority of jurists allow a deferred price to be higher than a cash price as long as one price is fixed at the time of contract. That is the basis of murabaha and of ordinary shop credit. Rent is not riba. Payment for the use of an asset whose owner keeps title and bears the risk of its loss is ijarah, which is why a car lease can be halal or not depending on who owns the car and what happens on a late payment. Partnership profit under mudarabah or musharakah is not riba because it is a share of actual profit, not a guaranteed sum, and a dividend is a share of a company's profit for the same reason.
The hard case in India is the service charge levied by interest-free cooperative credit societies. These societies lend on qard hasan, a loan returned without increase, and recover their administrative cost through a fixed charge. Supporters call it ujrah, a wage for the work of running the society; critics note that a fixed charge on a loan is exactly what the classical definition of riba describes. Both arguments are set out in the service charge debate article, and the contract itself is explained in the qard hasan explainer. The honest position is that the sector operates on an unresolved question, and a borrower should know that before signing.
What to do with riba already received or paid
Interest credited to a savings account does not become yours by being credited. The majority view is that it must be given away to the poor or to public benefit without the intention of reward, and that it must not be used for your own expenses, your taxes or anything that discharges a duty you owe. Leaving it with the bank is not an option most scholars accept, because the bank then keeps the benefit. The savings interest article covers how Indian Muslims actually track and dispose of it, including the quarterly statement routine. Interest already paid as a borrower is a matter for repentance and for closing the contract as soon as you can, not for any calculation.
- Move your operating balance to a current account, the one deposit the RBI defines as non-interest-bearing.
- Each quarter, read the interest credit line on the savings statement and record the amount separately.
- Give the recorded amount away in full to an eligible recipient, without claiming it as zakat or sadaqah.
- Do not renew maturing fixed or recurring deposits; move the principal to a halal use and dispose of the interest.
- Prepay interest-bearing debt before any other discretionary saving, starting with the highest rate.
Our view
If you are a salaried reader with a savings account, an FD or two and an EMI, the definition is not where the difficulty lies. You already know that byaj is sood and sood is riba. The useful work is structural: shift cash to a current account, let the FDs run off, give away the interest you have received, and treat the EMI as a debt to exit early. The is-it-halal hub carries product-by-product verdicts if a specific instrument is still unclear to you.
If you run a business, the distinction between riba and profit is your working tool. Supplier credit at a higher deferred price is trade; a cash credit limit from a bank is riba; a fixed service charge from an interest-free society is a contested fee you may accept while knowing the debate; a percentage processing fee on a loan is interest wearing a hat. Frequently asked questions
What is riba called in Hindi?
Riba is byaj (also written vyaj) in Hindi and sood in Urdu. Both words translate the English word interest, and both describe the same contract: a stipulated extra amount paid for the use of money over time. The Islamic prohibition applies to the contract, not to the word, so bank byaj, moneylender sood and a credit card finance charge all fall under riba.
Is bank byaj the same as sood from a moneylender?
Yes. In fiqh the rate, the lender's identity and the purpose of the loan do not change the category. Both involve a stipulated excess on money for time. The RBI's own deposit rules define savings and term deposits as interest bearing, which settles the factual question for Indian bank products.
Is paying an EMI haram in Islam?
The interest component of an EMI is riba, and paying riba is prohibited by the same texts that prohibit receiving it. The principal component is repayment of the loan and carries no sin. Some scholars permit an interest-bearing loan for a first home on grounds of necessity, with conditions; that is a necessity ruling, not a reclassification of the interest as something permitted.
Is savings account interest riba even when the amount is small?
Yes. The amount does not change the ruling. The RBI's Interest Rate on Deposits Directions define a savings deposit as an interest bearing demand deposit, so every credit on that account is a stipulated excess on money for time. The practical response is to move the balance to a current account, which the same Directions define as non-interest bearing, and to give away interest already received.

Is a late payment fee riba?
Most scholars treat a late payment fee as riba because it is an excess added to a debt for delay, which is the classical definition of riba al-nasi'ah. This holds for a flat fee as well as a percentage. The RBI requires card issuers to quote the late payment APR and method prominently, which makes the charge easy to identify on a statement and avoid by paying in full on time.
