Zakat is the most quantified obligation in Islam, 2.5 percent of qualifying wealth held for a lunar year above a defined threshold, and yet the Association of Muslim Professionals' published motivation data for building IndiaZakat records that 40 percent of Indian zakat payers miscalculate and 30 percent of zakat-eligible Muslims lack zakat knowledge entirely. This guide walks through the calculation as it applies in Indian conditions: the due date, the nisab threshold in rupee terms, the asset classes, and the method, drawing on the documented methodology of India's most detailed published calculator. Step one: fix your zakat date

Zakat falls due when your qualifying wealth has been above the nisab threshold for one lunar year, and the practical method, the one IndiaZakat's calculator teaches, is to fix a lunar date and keep it permanently: the first of Ramzan and the first of Muharram are the common anchors. On that date each year, you photograph your financial position, everything you own of zakatable wealth minus what you owe, and compute 2.5 percent. Fixing the date converts a rolling, per-asset obligation that almost nobody can track into a single annual accounting, and consistency matters more than which date you choose. Remember the calendar is lunar: a solar-year calculation short-changes the obligation by roughly eleven days a year.

Step two: measure against nisab

Nisab is the wealth floor below which zakat is not due, defined in the classical sources by weights of gold and silver. Two gram conventions circulate: 85 grams of gold and 595 grams of silver in widely used contemporary standards, and 87.48 grams of gold and 612.36 grams of silver in the tola-based convention common in the subcontinent, deriving from 7.5 tola of gold and 52.5 tola of silver. Your rupee nisab is the market price of those grams on your zakat date, which is why no honest article prints a fixed rupee figure: gold and silver prices move daily, and a printed number is stale by publication. Check the day's price per gram, multiply, and note which metal you are using. Because silver's threshold is far lower in rupee terms than gold's, using the silver nisab brings more people into the obligation and is the cautious course many Indian muftis recommend; if your mixed wealth exceeds the silver-based figure, the safer position treats zakat as due. Edge cases belong with your own imam or mufti, exactly as IndiaZakat's methodology directs.

Step three: the asset sweep

The documented Indian calculator walks through the classes worth listing here. Cash, in hand and across every bank account, including what sits in savings and current accounts and any cooperative society deposits. Gold and silver, by weight and purity: gold at 24, 22 or 18 carat is valued at its market rate, and household silver including utensils counts, with IndiaZakat applying a 90 percent purity guideline for silverware. Investments: shares, mutual funds and bonds are zakatable, with the platform's published approach applying 2.5 percent on value; for screened equity holdings, methodology details differ by scholar and our zakat on stocks page covers the approaches. Business assets: trading stock and receivables count at value, per the treatment on our business assets page. Advances and deposits you have paid that will return to you, such as security deposits, count as yours. Land held as trading property, bought to resell, is zakatable stock; the home you live in is not. Personal effects, the house, the car, clothing, are exempt.

Then subtract what you owe: debts due, including instalments imminently payable, reduce the zakatable base. What remains is your net zakatable wealth; if it clears nisab, the due amount is 2.5 percent, computed on the whole amount, not just the excess above nisab.

Two Indian specifics worth flagging

First, jewellery. The bulk of many Indian households' zakatable wealth is gold ornaments, and the question of whether worn jewellery is zakatable divides the schools: the Hanafi position, followed by most Indian Muslims, holds gold and silver jewellery zakatable regardless of use. The full treatment, including valuation by carat, is in zakat on gold jewellery. Second, interest. Bank interest received is not your wealth and cannot be counted toward zakat or paid as zakat; it is disposed of separately to the poor without intention of reward, per the mechanics in purifying savings account interest. Keep the purification flow and the zakat flow in separate columns; conflating them is among the most common documented errors.

Paying it: the Indian infrastructure

India has no state zakat authority, so payment is private, and the verified infrastructure is thin but real. IndiaZakat pairs its calculator with dual-screened cause distribution at zero commission and 80G receipts, reviewed in our IndiaZakat guide. The Zakat Foundation of India deploys zakat institutionally, from UPSC coaching to orphan care, reviewed in our ZFI guide. Direct giving to eligible relatives and neighbours remains the classically preferred first resort where genuine need is personally known. Whatever the channel, zakat goes to the eight categories the Quran fixes, with the poor and needy foremost.

The errors the data says people make

AMP's finding that 40 percent of payers miscalculate is worth unpacking into the specific errors, because each is avoidable. Skipping the jewellery is the largest by rupee value, treated fully in zakat on gold jewellery. Using the solar year quietly underpays by about three percent compounding, eleven missing days at a time. Paying on income rather than wealth inverts the base entirely: zakat is not a salary tithe, and a payer who gives 2.5 percent of earnings while holding unassessed gold and investments has both overpaid and underpaid at once. Forgetting receivables, money lent to relatives, security deposits, business dues, understates the base, since sound receivables are wealth. Counting the employer's provident fund before receipt runs ahead of the dominant ruling, under which zakat on retirement funds falls due when the money reaches your possession. And netting zakat against taxes paid confuses two systems with different bases and different intentions, the distinction drawn in zakat versus income tax.

The fix for all of them is the same boring machinery: a fixed date, a written sweep list reused annually, and a calculator that itemises rather than estimates. Precision in zakat is not scrupulosity; the amounts are owed to identifiable categories of people, and the difference between a guessed and computed liability is real money that was theirs.

Keep the receipts and the working sheet together, year after year. The file settles family questions, catches assets that quietly dropped out of the sweep, and turns next year's calculation into an update rather than a fresh start.

Where should the money go once calculated? The Quran fixes the eight categories of recipients, and the Indian payer's practical choice is between direct giving to known eligible recipients, which maximises certainty of tamlik, and institutional giving through platforms and foundations, which reaches vetted cases beyond your circle. Both routes are examined in the guides to IndiaZakat and the Zakat Foundation of India; many households sensibly split between the two.

Use the HalalWallet zakat calculator to run the numbers, and treat the first properly calculated year as the template: the same date, the same sweep, the same method, every lunar year. The obligation is precise by design, and precision, it turns out, is mostly a checklist kept faithfully. For how the obligation interacts with what the government already takes, see zakat versus income tax.

Quick Answer

Calculate zakat in India: fix a lunar due date, measure nisab from gold and silver gram prices in INR, then apply 2.5 percent across cash, gold and investments.
