Working in a bank is haram when the job itself involves writing, calculating, checking or witnessing interest-based contracts, and on that point Darul Ifta Deoband and the Saudi Standing Committee quoted on islamqa.info agree. They part ways on everything else. Deoband's published fatwas allow lawful employment in a bank that 'does not involve interest in any way', while naming it 'not better'. The Standing Committee and Shaykh Ibn Uthaymin hold that even a driver or guard at a riba-based bank is cooperating in sin. For an Indian Muslim weighing an IBPS posting, an SBI clerk job or a bank IT role, the honest answer is therefore role by role, and this page gives it that way. Our halal banking guide covers the customer side.

What the hadith actually prohibits
Every fatwa on bank employment starts from the same report in Sahih Muslim, narrated by Jabir: the Prophet cursed the one who consumes riba, the one who pays it, the one who writes it down and the two who witness it, and said they are all the same. Four roles are named. Consumer and payer are the bank and its borrower or depositor. Writer and witness are the people who document and attest the contract, which in a modern bank means the staff who originate loans, record interest, prepare the deposit and loan ledgers and sign off on them.
The Deoband answer reproduced on islamqa.org as fatwa 382/J puts it plainly: 'Writing interest record is also haram as giving and taking interest is haram', so 'a bank employment which involves writing interest accounts will not be permissible'. The islamqa.info answer to question 26771 quotes al-Nawawi's commentary that the hadith prohibits 'the writing down or witnessing of a contract between the two parties involved in a riba-based deal' and 'also includes a prohibition of helping others to commit wrong acts'. That second clause, helping, is where the two camps separate.
The two contemporary positions, quoted
The role-based position is the one Indian Muslims usually hear from Deoband. Fatwa 5/7=H/1429, reproduced on islamqa.org, says: 'One can adopt a lawful employment in bank which does not involve interest in any way, while doing haram work is unlawful like writing interest, bearing witness to it etc.' Fatwa 382/J adds that 'the employment as peon, cleaner, gateman etc may be allowed but not better'. The test is whether the specific duties touch the interest contract, directly or by assisting those who do. The same test runs through Deoband's later answers to IT staff, which allow work that does not involve interest while advising the questioner to keep looking for something else.
The blanket position is the Saudi Standing Committee's, set out at length in islamqa.info answer 26771. Fatawa al-Lajnah al-Daimah 15/41 states that it is not permissible to work in a bank that deals with riba 'even if the work that the Muslim does has nothing to do with riba, because he is giving the employees who do work with riba with what they need'. Volume 15/55 says there is 'no section in the riba-based bank that is exempt from this ruling'. Shaykh Ibn Uthaymin, quoted from Fatawa Islamiyyah 2/401, extends it to drivers and guards on the reasoning that 'accepting employment with a riba-based organization implies that you approve of them'. Under this view the only answer is to leave and trust in provision, and answer 100229 on the same site says to do so 'as soon as you can' rather than waiting for an alternative.
Neither camp disputes the other's evidence. They weigh the Quranic prohibition on helping in sin (al-Maidah 5:2) differently: Deoband draws the line at duties that themselves constitute or directly assist the interest contract, the Standing Committee draws it at the institution. An Indian Muslim who follows Hanafi fiqh through Deoband has a published, role-specific ruling to rely on. One who follows the Saudi scholars does not get a role-by-role answer at all.
Indian bank roles, one by one
The table below applies the two positions to the roles that actually exist in an Indian public or private sector bank. The 'role-based view' column follows Deoband's test; the 'blanket view' column follows the Standing Committee. Where Deoband itself calls a role permissible but 'not better', we say so, because that qualifier is part of the fatwa and not our gloss.
| Role in an Indian bank | Does it write, check or witness interest? | Role-based view (Deoband) | Blanket view (Standing Committee) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Loan officer, credit analyst, recovery | Yes, it is the contract itself | Haram | Haram |
| Cashier or teller posting interest, FD or loan entries | Yes, records interest | Haram | Haram |
| Branch manager signing off on lending | Yes, witnesses and approves | Haram | Haram |
| Core IT, database and systems that run the ledger | Indirectly, keeps the system that records it | Avoid; permitted only if the work has no interest link, and 'not better' | Haram |
| Information security, network, cyber | No direct link | Permitted, better to seek another job | Haram |
| HR, payroll, premises, marketing | No direct link | Permitted, 'not better' | Haram |
| Security guard, peon, cleaner, driver | No | Permitted, 'not better' | Haram |
| Treasury, forex dealing, bond desk | Yes, trades interest instruments | Haram | Haram |
Two rows deserve a note. Core IT is the hardest case for the role-based camp: a database administrator who maintains the loan ledger is not writing a contract, but the system he keeps alive is the writing. Deoband's answers to IT questioners turn on whether the duties involve interest 'directly or indirectly', and a core banking engineer should read that phrase against his own job description before assuming he is clear. Treasury is the easy case the other way: a dealer in government securities and interbank lending is trading interest all day, and no scholar in either camp treats that as support work.
The IBPS and SBI aspirant question
Most Indians asking this question are not yet employed. They are preparing for the Common Recruitment Process that the Institute of Banking Personnel Selection runs for public sector banks, which on ibps.in is split into CRP RRBs (regional rural banks), CRP CSA (customer service associates, the clerical cadre), CRP PO/MTs (probationary officers and management trainees) and CRP Specialist Officers. The exam does not decide your role; the posting does. A clerk may spend years at a cash counter, a probationary officer rotates through credit, and a specialist officer in IT or HR may never see a loan file.
- Clerical and customer service posts put you at the counter where deposit and loan entries are made, which the role-based view treats as writing interest unless your duties are confined to non-interest work.
- Probationary officer and management trainee tracks rotate through credit appraisal and recovery as a matter of course, so the role-based view gives no comfortable answer for the first years.
- Specialist officer posts in IT, HR, law, security and rajbhasha are the ones Deoband's test can clear, with the 'not better' qualifier attached.
- Regional rural bank posts carry the same analysis as commercial banks, because RRBs lend on interest in the same way.
- Under the blanket view none of the four tracks is permissible, and the aspirant's decision is made before the exam.
Public sector specifics: salary, pension and provident fund
A public sector bank salary raises three further questions that a private company salary does not. First, the salary itself: under the role-based view, pay for permitted duties is halal income and pay for impermissible duties is not, so a specialist officer and a loan officer at the same grade are in different positions. Second, the provident fund and pension: bank employees' EPF or NPS contributions accrue interest-based returns regardless of role, and our EPF interest guide and the NPS verdict explain the compulsory versus voluntary line that most Indian scholars draw. Third, staff loans at concessional interest: these are interest contracts in which the employee is the payer, and no fatwa we fetched exempts them.
The practical reading is that a bank employee's halal status is not settled by the job title alone. It is settled by the duties, the retirement products and the staff benefits taken together, and each of those can be managed separately. Declining staff loans and purifying the interest component of retirement accruals are decisions within the employee's control even when a posting is not.
Already in a bank: what you can actually do
If you follow the role-based view and your current duties fail the test, the first move is internal, not resignation. Indian banks post staff across functions, and a request to move to IT, HR, compliance, security or administration is a normal career step rather than a religious declaration. Make the request in writing, keep a record, and treat the months until it lands as a transition you are actively working to end. If you follow the blanket view, the fatwa you follow says to leave as soon as you can while looking for other work, and it does not accept 'until I find an alternative' as a reason to stay.
Income already earned from impermissible duties is dealt with the same way as other tainted income: it is not consumed, and it is given to the poor without expecting reward. Our guide to what Indian Muslims do with savings account interest describes the purification mechanics, and the same channels serve here. Scholars do not require you to return money to the bank, and they do not treat the salary as a debt you owe the state. What they require is that it does not stay with you.
Halal income outside banking is a real question for someone whose whole CV is financial services. Accounting, audit of non-financial companies, compliance roles at manufacturers, corporate finance teams that manage working capital without lending, and self-employment are the usual routes. Our affiliate marketing verdict covers one online income that many ex-bankers test, and the interest-free business loan comparison covers how a trader funds a start without a bank.
Insurance companies, NBFCs and lending apps
The same analysis extends to the rest of Indian financial services, and in some cases it bites harder. A conventional life or general insurer sells contracts that most scholars treat as containing gharar and, in the case of endowment and ULIP products, riba; our LIC verdict sets out the necessity debate. An NBFC's entire book is interest lending, with no deposit side to hide behind. A fintech lending app's product team, collections team and risk team all sit on the writer-and-witness side of the hadith, however modern the office looks.
- Insurance sales and underwriting are harder to clear than bank support roles, because the product itself is the contested contract.
- NBFC and microfinance lending roles are equivalent to bank loan officer roles under both views.
- Payments companies, UPI apps and card networks that do not lend are treated far more leniently, provided your own work is not on a credit product.
- Fintech lending apps and buy-now-pay-later firms are lenders in substance, whatever the app calls the charge.
- Stock exchanges, depositories and SEBI-registered advisers that do not lend are outside the hadith's four roles, though individual products may still raise questions.
Our view
For an Indian Muslim who follows Deoband and Hanafi fiqh, which is most readers of this edition, the published fatwas give a workable rule: do not take a role that writes, calculates, checks or approves interest contracts, and if you take a support role, treat the 'not better' qualifier seriously and keep a route out. That rules out the PO track and the counter for practical purposes, leaves the specialist officer track open with reservations, and tells the existing employee to transfer rather than resign in a panic. For a reader who follows the Saudi scholars, the fatwa is simpler and harder: no role in a riba-based bank, and leave as soon as you can.
What nobody should do is rely on the widely repeated idea that 'the bank has other income besides interest, so it is fine'. Neither camp accepts that argument; islamqa.info rejects it in terms, and Deoband's test is about your duties, not the bank's revenue mix. Choose your scholars, read what they actually wrote, and apply it to your job description rather than your job title. India has no Islamic bank to move to, as our history of the RBI's position explains, so the choice is between roles, not between banks. Frequently asked questions
Is working in a bank haram in Islam?
It is haram when the job involves writing, calculating, checking or witnessing interest contracts, by the hadith in Sahih Muslim that all scholars cite. For roles that do not touch interest, Darul Ifta Deoband permits the work while calling it 'not better', and the Saudi Standing Committee prohibits it as cooperation in sin. Your answer depends on your duties and on which scholars you follow.
Can a Muslim work in a bank's IT department?
Under Deoband's published test, yes if the work does not involve interest directly or indirectly, with advice to look for another job. Information security and network roles clear that test more easily than core banking and ledger systems, which keep the interest records running. The Standing Committee view prohibits all IT work at a riba-based bank. Read your own job description against the phrase 'directly or indirectly'.
Is a bank clerk job through IBPS halal?
The CRP CSA clerical cadre usually places you at a counter where deposit, fixed deposit and loan entries are posted, which the role-based view treats as writing interest. Some clerical postings are confined to non-interest work, but you cannot choose that in advance. Under the blanket view no IBPS track is permissible. The specialist officer track is the one Deoband's test can clear.
What should I do with salary already earned from a haram bank role?
Scholars treat it as tainted income: do not consume it, give it to the poor without expecting reward, and do not return it to the bank. You are not required to repay the state. The purification channels described in our savings account interest guide apply equally here. Going forward, move to a permitted role or leave, depending on which fatwa you follow.
Are insurance and NBFC jobs judged the same way as bank jobs?
Mostly, and sometimes more strictly. An NBFC's whole business is interest lending, so its loan, risk and collections roles equal a bank loan officer under both views. Conventional insurance sales and underwriting are harder to clear because the contract itself is contested. Payment companies and exchanges that do not lend are treated more leniently, provided your work is not on a credit product.

Does the bank's non-interest income make the job halal?
No. The argument that a bank earns fees as well as interest, so a salary is mixed and acceptable, is rejected explicitly in islamqa.info's answer 26771, and it plays no part in Deoband's test, which looks at your duties rather than the bank's revenue. The question is always whether you write, check or witness the interest contract, or help those who do.
