Affiliate marketing is halal when three conditions hold: the product or service you promote is itself permissible, your promotion is truthful and disclosed, and the commission is a defined reward for a defined act rather than a share in an interest contract. The arrangement is a ju'alah (reward for a result) or a wakalah bil ujrah (paid agency), both long accepted in fiqh. Amazon Associates India pays up to 10 percent on qualifying purchases and Flipkart Affiliate up to 20 percent in some categories, and nothing in either programme's structure is objectionable. The problems are in the niches, specifically credit cards, loan apps, fantasy sports and crypto exchanges, and in the honesty of the content. Start with our is-it-halal hub for the general tests.

The contract: what you are actually being paid for
In an affiliate programme the merchant announces a reward for anyone who brings a customer who completes a purchase. That is the classical structure of ju'alah: an open offer, a defined task, and payment on completion. Jurists accepted ju'alah precisely for cases where the work is uncertain and the result is what matters, which describes a creator who may publish ten reviews before one converts. The alternative framing, wakalah bil ujrah, treats the affiliate as a paid agent of the merchant for the limited purpose of soliciting buyers. Either way, the commission is a fee for a lawful service, not a return on capital and not a share in a debt.
Amazon's own Operating Agreement for India describes the relationship in terms that fit this reading. Advertising fees are earned on 'Qualifying Purchases' made through 'Special Links', a Qualifying Purchase requires that the product is 'shipped to, and paid for by, the customer', and the agreement forbids the affiliate from implying any broader relationship with Amazon. You are paid for a result you helped cause, on terms set in advance. That is the whole of the permissibility question at contract level; everything else is about what you promote and how.
- The product or service must be halal in itself; commission on a haram sale is haram income regardless of the contract form.
- The promotion must be truthful: no invented experiences, no fake scarcity, no claims the product cannot support.
- The relationship must be disclosed, which Amazon requires anyway through the statement 'As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases'.
- The reward must be a defined fee for a defined act, which a percentage of sale value or a fixed bounty both satisfy.
- Cookie-stuffing, forced clicks and other tricks that earn commission without a real referral are deception and fall outside the contract.
What Amazon Associates India actually pays and requires
Amazon.in's Advertising Fee Schedule for October to November 2026, fetched from affiliate-program.amazon.in, sets category rates rather than a single number. Luxury beauty pays 8 percent, apparel, luggage and watches 7.5 percent, jewellery and shoes 7 percent, books and sports 4.72 percent, home and office 4.25 percent, electronics 2.80 percent, computers and large appliances 2.45 percent, and most mobile phones 1 percent with a long list of models at 0 percent. 'All other categories' pay 5 percent. Bill payments pay 30 percent capped at Rs 3. Separately, fixed bounties pay Rs 100 for a Prime paid membership, Rs 150 for an Audible trial or paid plan, Rs 200 for an Amazon Business registration and Rs 400 for a GST-validated seller registration.
| Amazon.in category (Oct to Nov 2026) | Advertising fee rate |
|---|---|
| Luxury Beauty | 8% |
| Apparel, Luggage and Bags, Watches | 7.5% |
| Jewellery, Shoes and Handbags | 7% |
| Books, Baby, Automotive, Sports | 4.72% |
| Home, Home Improvement, Office | 4.25% |
| Electronics, Video Games | 2.80% |
| Computers, Large Appliances | 2.45% |
| Mobile Phones (most models 0%) | 1% |
The mechanics matter for the honesty test. A customer's session lasts 24 hours from the click, and a product added to the cart in that session earns a fee if ordered within 89 days. Fees are paid roughly 60 days after month end, and Amazon may hold NEFT payments until at least Rs 1,000 has accrued. Flight bookings, gift cards, gaming consoles, Prime membership, Kindle ebooks and gold and silver coins earn nothing. The agreement also obliges an Indian affiliate to raise GST-compliant invoices and accept income tax withholding 'at the rate stipulated under applicable law', which we come to below.
Flipkart Affiliate, as published
Flipkart's affiliate page at affiliate.flipkart.com publishes commission ranges rather than a full schedule: books and ebooks 6 to 12 percent, toys 6 to 20 percent, computers up to 6 percent, mobiles up to 5 percent and cameras up to 4 percent. It offers banners, widgets and APIs for listing deals and a real-time reporting panel. The page does not publish payment timing, minimum payout or the operating agreement in the way Amazon does, so a creator who wants those terms must register and read the panel. On the permissibility question Flipkart is structurally identical to Amazon: a defined commission on a completed sale of a physical or digital product.
Which Indian affiliate niches pass and which fail
The contract is permissible, so the verdict moves to the product. The table applies the first condition, a halal underlying sale, to the niches Indian creators most often promote. Where the verdict is 'fails', no contract structure rescues it, because the commission is a fee for bringing someone into a prohibited transaction. Our credit card verdict explains why card referrals sit on the wrong side of the line even when the referrer never pays interest, and the crypto debate covers the exchange question.
| Niche | What the customer buys | Verdict | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Electronics, books, home, apparel | A physical product | Passes | Lawful sale, commission is a referral fee |
| Online courses and software | A service or licence | Passes if content is lawful | Check the course subject, not just the platform |
| Credit cards | An interest-bearing credit line | Fails | You are paid to bring a borrower into a riba contract |
| Personal loan and BNPL apps | An interest or late-fee loan | Fails | Same as credit cards, with higher charges |
| Fantasy sports and real-money gaming | A stake on an uncertain outcome | Fails | Maysir; the product is gambling |
| Crypto exchange sign-ups | Trading access, often with margin and lending | Contested, mostly fails | Depends on the token and the exchange's interest products |
| Conventional insurance | A gharar-laden contract | Fails for most scholars | Term cover is debated, endowment and ULIP are not |
| Halal investing apps and Shariah funds | A screened investment | Passes | Referral to a lawful product |
Two practical notes. First, Amazon India's own schedule excludes gold and silver coins from fees, so the one commodity niche that raises possession questions is not available anyway. Second, a mixed site that earns mostly from electronics but carries one credit card comparison page has a purification problem, not a shutdown problem: remove the offending page, and give away the commission it earned.
How affiliate income is taxed in India
Affiliate commission is business or professional income, and the merchant deducts tax at source before paying you. Section 393 of the Income-tax Act 2025, fetched from incometaxindia.gov.in, lists 'any income by way of commission (not being insurance commission) or brokerage' paid by a specified person to a resident, with a rate of 2 percent and a threshold limit of Rs 20,000. Once your commission from one payer crosses that figure in the tax year, the deduction applies, and Amazon's agreement says the company will withhold 'as per the provisions of Income Tax Act' and issue the withholding certificate. The amount deducted is a credit against your final liability, not the final tax.
Your final tax depends on your slab and on whether you report the income under a presumptive scheme or with full accounts, which is a question for a chartered accountant rather than this page. What the Amazon agreement makes clear is the GST side: the fee is 'inclusive of all taxes including applicable goods and services tax', and you undertake 'timely issuance of GST compliant invoices' and depositing the tax. Whether you must register for GST depends on your turnover and on the export-of-services question for foreign-paid programmes, and we did not fetch a GST page, so take that to a professional too.
Zakat on affiliate income
Affiliate commission is zakatable like any other cash income: what matters is the balance you hold on your zakat date, not what you earned during the year. Commission that has been paid and sits in your bank account is cash and counts in full. Commission that has accrued in the Amazon or Flipkart panel but has not been paid is a receivable, and the majority view treats a receivable you confidently expect to collect as zakatable too. Tax already deducted at source never reaches you and is not yours to count. Our zakat calculation guide for India walks through nisab and the method, and the zakat hub has the calculator.
Disclosure and honesty rules for a Muslim creator
The second condition, honest promotion, is where most affiliate content actually fails, and it is the condition a creator controls entirely. The rules below combine what Amazon's Operating Agreement demands with what the prohibition on ghish (deception in trade) demands, and the two overlap almost completely.
- State the affiliate relationship on every page or video that carries links; Amazon requires the exact sentence 'As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases' or a substantially similar one.
- Review only products you have used or researched enough to describe accurately, and say which it was.
- Do not list a product as 'best' because it pays a higher rate; the Amazon schedule makes rate-chasing easy and it is a form of deception toward the reader.
- Do not invent urgency, stock levels or discounts that the merchant's page does not show.
- Remove links to products that fail the halal test even if they convert well, and purify the commission they already earned.
- Keep the Amazon marks and content within the licence the agreement grants, and do not imply Amazon endorses you.
- Keep records of invoices, withholding certificates and payouts; honest income is also documented income.
Verdict
For a creator promoting physical goods, books, courses on lawful subjects, software and halal financial products, affiliate marketing is a permissible income with a clear contractual basis, and the published Amazon and Flipkart terms contain nothing that changes that. Treat the commission as ordinary business income: expect 2 percent withholding above Rs 20,000 from each payer, invoice correctly, and include the cash and receivables in your zakat base. For a creator whose traffic monetises best through credit cards, loan apps, fantasy sports or crypto exchange sign-ups, the honest answer is that those pages are the business, and the business fails the first condition; a halal site in those niches is a different site.
For someone deciding whether to build an affiliate income at all, the useful comparison is with a bank or NBFC salary: affiliate commission on halal goods has fewer scholarly caveats than most financial sector jobs, at the cost of being uncertain and slow, with Amazon paying roughly 60 days after month end and holding small balances. A trader who wants to fund stock for an affiliate-driven store without interest should read the business financing hub. Frequently asked questions
Is affiliate marketing halal or haram in Islam?
Halal, provided the product is permissible, the promotion is honest and disclosed, and the commission is a defined fee for a completed referral. The structure is a ju'alah or paid agency, both accepted in fiqh. It becomes haram when the product is prohibited, such as credit cards, interest loans, gambling or most conventional insurance, or when the content deceives the reader.
Is Amazon affiliate marketing halal in India?
Yes for ordinary product categories. Amazon.in's schedule pays category rates from 1 to 8 percent on qualifying purchases plus fixed bounties, and the Operating Agreement defines a qualifying purchase as a product shipped to and paid for by the customer. That is a lawful sale and a defined fee. Avoid promoting the few listings that are themselves impermissible, and disclose the relationship as the agreement requires.
Can I promote credit cards as a Muslim affiliate?
No. A credit card referral pays you for bringing a customer into an interest-bearing credit agreement, which places you in the role of assisting a riba contract even though you never pay interest yourself. The same applies to personal loan apps and buy-now-pay-later products. If such pages already exist on your site, remove them and give away the commission they earned.
How is affiliate income taxed in India?
As business or professional income. Under section 393 of the Income-tax Act 2025, commission paid by a specified person to a resident attracts tax deducted at source at 2 percent once it exceeds Rs 20,000 in the tax year, and Amazon's agreement confirms it withholds under the Act and issues certificates. The deduction is a credit against your final slab-based liability. GST invoicing obligations also apply under Amazon's terms.
Do I pay zakat on affiliate earnings?
Yes, on what you hold at your zakat date: paid commission sitting in your account counts as cash, and accrued but unpaid commission that you confidently expect to receive is a receivable that most scholars include. Tax withheld at source is not yours and is not counted. Use the method in our India zakat calculation guide and the hub calculator.

Does Flipkart Affiliate work the same way as Amazon?
Structurally yes: a defined commission on a completed sale, with published ranges of 6 to 12 percent on books, 6 to 20 percent on toys, up to 6 percent on computers, up to 5 percent on mobiles and up to 4 percent on cameras. Flipkart's public page does not publish payout timing or the full agreement, so register and read the panel before relying on it.
